queer fest

Medicine Show Theatre LAB will begin its season with Queer Fest, a two-week festival of plays and multi-media storytelling by queer authors exploring themes not often addressed by the mainstream community. It will fall on June 6th to 15th, before Gay Pride week.

Queer Fest will celebrate the works of those who fit under the queer umbrella, especially aiming to include those generally left out in LGBT media—transgender and nonbinary people, intersex people, and people whose sexualities fall outside of lesbian, gay, or bisexual. The festival will run 10 pieces over 40 performances.

The festival seeks to explore the experiences of queer, trans, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary people.

In the decade after "Will and Grace" and "Modern Family,” certain faces of gay culture are permissible. But for instance, playwright Bruce Jones, an African-American from the midwest, notes that substance abuse among the queer community is never shown among people of color, "only white club-boys." His two-part play, "Mansfield" and "Mansfield Part 2" breaks new ground.
